What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is often compared to physiotherapy or chiropractic care, but its focus is slightly different. Osteopaths view the human body as a complex, integrated system, with a focus on identifying the root cause of pain and dysfunction to achieve long-term resolution, as well as helping to reduce and manage symptoms.

Training and Approach

Osteopaths complete four to five years of university level training, most commonly holding a Masters degree in Osteopathy/Osteopathic Medicine. Our training covers everything that makes us human: complete human anatomy, physiology & pathology of all bodily systems, psychology, neuroscience and pain science. From early on, we’re taught to consider the wider picture, learning how our parts and systems function together, rather than solely in isolation.

Unlike traditional medicine, Osteopaths encourage you to talk about all of your concerns, never telling you to just pick one! This approach can be particularly helpful at connecting the dots when symptoms are unexplained, complex, long-standing, and have not responded to other treatments or received a clear diagnosis.

What Can Osteopathy Help With?

  • Acute injuries/suspected injuries

  • Acute pain

  • Ongoing pain, discomfort or mobility issues

  • Long standing injuries, post surgeries or chronic conditions

  • Unexplained symptoms

What to Expect From an Appointment

Hands-on treatment is often part of osteopathy, but it’s only one element. We take a full medical history and thorough consultation, thoroughly examining the areas of concern and letting you know what we find and how this may relate to your symptoms.

Advice, treatment and exercises are chosen specifically for you with your lifestyle, goals and capabilities in mind. We explain everything as we go and ask for your thoughts and input, you are fully involved in your recovery process, rather than passively receiving care without a proper understanding of what we are doing and why.

In Summary

Whether your symptoms are new or something you’ve lived with for years, osteopathy focuses on restoring balance to your body and understanding within your self.

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” — C.S. Lewis
