What causes TMD or TMJ ?
TMJ and TMD are terms used interchangably in medicine for Temporomandibular (jaw joint) dysfunction. TMD is often caused by a combination of the following factors listed below that vary person to person.
Posture
Such as forward head posture or low tongue posture
Tongue Positioning/Tie
Incorrect tongue resting position can cause teeth grinding or jaw clenching during the day and night

Bite
How your teeth meet can create uneven and increased pressure on the jaw and force it out of alignment, in particular deep overbite or crossbite
Stress
Our body naturally tightens the jaw and shoulders when under perceived threat to protect our head and neck, often accompanied by clenching and grinding
Mouth breathing
Breathing through your mouth instead of your nose disrupts the whole system
Tension
Chronic, unaddressed tension builds up creating more load on the jaw joint and surrounding muscles
Hypermobility
Overstretching of the jaw ligaments and tissue can cause pain and reactive muscle clenching or tightening.
