Osteopathic Treatment for Elbow & Wrist Pain

Elbow or wrist pain can be incredibly frustrating, interfering with almost all daily tasks, our ability to exercise, play sports or enjoy our hobbies

How Common is Elbow & Wrist Pain?

Elbow &/or wrist pain is more common in people who perform repetitive tasks with their hands, or play sports or execise frequently.

Causes of Elbow & Wrist Pain?

Though the elbow or wrist may be where the pain shows up, very rarely is the elbow the driver of the problem.

This is because movement of the arm starts at the shoulder, it is the most mobile joint in the human body, it dictates the movement pattern that our arm takes

Lack of mobility:

If your shoulder can not rotate fully to carry out your task, the elbow picks up the slack - a joint that is not designed to be this mobile.

Lack of strength or control:

For example, pain when pressing through the wrist (plank, press up, yoga), is very often related with the shoulder not taking the load properly.

Too much mobility:

For people who are clinically hypermobile, or even just more bendy than average, your elbow joints can hyperextend when performing tasks, or bend too much putting stress through either side.

This is noticeable when performing the exercises mentioned above, where your body weight is pushing through your elbow,  while it is in a less stable position to support it.

Too much mobility and lack of control:

Hypermobility is commonly associated with lack of control in the shoulder too, as mentioned above.

Normally, our brain and receptors in our joints work together, automatically, to recognise when our joints are not in an optimal position and adjust accordingly. We have a huge amount of medical research to suggest that this does not happen as well in people who are hypermobile. Therefore many people never notice their elbows are bending at strange angles until pain, or inability to perform crops up.

Can Osteopathy help with elbow & / or wrist pain?

We will absolutely help you figure out whats causing your pain, and what to do about it.

You may have received a diagnosis already, but a diagnosis on it's own just identifies the end result, all too often, the factors that caused the issue in the first place are not identified or explained, advice on how to modify tasks or tackle the problem is not given.

We help people who have received a diagnosis, but no resolution (examples listed below), or have never previously sought help.

  • carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)

  • cubital tunnel syndrome

  • De Quervain's Tenosynovitis

  • tendinopathy (irritation of tendons) including:

- tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

-golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis)

  • Sprains or strains

  • Arthritis

Alex Kershaw, West Sussex

Had my first session with Posture Positive the other day, and it was a great experience. Holly was incredibly welcoming and understanding from the moment I arrived. She explained everything clearly before doing any hands-on work, which made me feel comfortable and confident throughout the session. I’m already looking forward to my next appointment!
